A passage from today's NT reading talked about the withered fig tree. The fig tree is a picture of Israel, where it takes up space but doesn't produce fruit. A withered tree is usually chopped down. Why does God keep me around? As a Christian, am I bearing fruit or am I like a withered fig tree?
In verse 20 it says that the tree was withered to it's roots. When we stop bearing fruit the problem always begins with the roots. Further down in verse 25 Jesus reminds us that we must have FAITH and FORGIVENESS when we pray so that your Father in heaven will also forgive your sins.

A good reminder for us to keep our roots firmly planted in the Holy Spirit so that we can continue to do God's work and bear fruit.
Deuteronomy 9:6
“Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people.
We are all sinners, yet God still loves us and wants us to live for Him. It's crucial that we seek forgiveness from God and then do our best for Him.
I don't want to be like the withered fig tree! So important to have strong roots of faith.
Our OT passage pointed out that we need to remember that we are not believers because we are somehow special or more deserving of being saved or self-righteous. He chose us in His sovereignty and we need to be grateful, not boastful, of our salvation.
