Sunday, June 30th: 2 Kings 17:1-18:12, Acts 20:1-38, Psalm 148:1-14, Proverbs 18:6-7 ~ Tammy

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Kings 17:1-18:12, Acts 20:1-38, Psalm 148:1-14, Proverbs 18:6-7

Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels;
they are asking for a beating.
The mouths of fools are their ruin;
they trap themselves with their lips.
A reminder of how very important our words are!

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Kings 15:1-16:20, Acts 19:13-41, Psalm 147:1-20, Proverbs 18:4-5

Psalm 147:4-5
He counts the stars
and calls them all by name.
How great is our Lord! His power is absolute!
    His understanding is beyond comprehension!

That is truly mind boggling when you think of it.  The sheer numbers involved in this is so much more astonishing than the psalmist knew at the time.  According to google there are an estimated one billion trillion stars in the universe!!  How anyone can think anything in our universe came to be by chance is beyond me.

We serve an awesome God!

Friday, June 28th: 2 Kings 13:1-14:29, Acts 18:23-19:12, Psalm 146:1-10, Proverbs 18:2-3 ~ Tammy

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Kings 13:1-14:29, Acts 18:23-19:12, Psalm 146:1-10, Proverbs 18:2-3

Psalm 146:3-5
Don’t put your confidence in powerful people;
there is no help for you there.
When they breathe their last, they return to the earth,
and all their plans die with them.
But joyful are those who have the God of Israel[a] as their helper,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.

A good reminder to remember that though people can help us to a certain degree here on earth, our reliance and confidence should rest in God, not man.  He is the only One who will never fail, never let us down, never betray us, never be unfaithful.

2 Kings 12:2-4 NIV
Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him. [3] The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.

When I read this, I would love for it to end with saying that Joash did what was right in everything, all the years of his life. Joash was however human, like we are, and was therefore not perfect.
This isn't an excuse for making wrong choices. This can be motivation to keep building on what we do right for God, and not stop short and think that it's good enough. We need to keep pressing forward and building on what we do well for God.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Kings 9:14-10:31, Acts 17:1-34, Psalm 144:1-15, Proverbs 17:27-28

27 A truly wise person uses few words;
a person with understanding is even-tempered.
28 Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent;
with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.
A great reminder of how powerful our words are and that we should consider them carefully, before speaking.

Tuesday, June 25th: 2 Kings 8:1-9:13, Acts 16:16-40, Psalm 143:1-12, Proverbs 17:26 ~ Jeannine

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Kings 8:1-9:13, Acts 16:16-40, Psalm 143:1-12, Proverbs 17:26

Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household.   Acts 16:30-32

This feels like such a simplistic answer to the question asked. "Believe and you will be saved along with everyone in your household."

I pray that everyone in my household will be saved but unfortunately it's not my faith that will save them. They will have to make the decision for themselves.

In the meantime, I will continue to teach them about and show them Jesus' love and pray that this will be the case for all of them.

Monday, June 24: Deuteronomy 2:1-3:29, Luke 6:12-38, Psalm 67:1-7, Proverbs 11:27

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Deuteronomy 2:1-3:29, Luke 6:12-38, Psalm 67:1-7, Proverbs 11:27

I've got grad on the mind since my youngest child is graduating this week. These verses stood out for me through that lens:

For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”’

It may not have been 40 years that my son has endured through high school (although he may argue that it felt like it ;) but surely God has blessed the work of his hands and he knows the trials that our son endured during that great "wilderness" of the high school experience and the unknown that it brought. When we are following God's plan for our lives, we lack nothing.

35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

Advice for life for the graduate and everyone.
Love people.
Do nice things.
Give generously.
Be like Jesus.
Show compassion.

May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
that your way may be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.

A send off to into a new journey or direction.
Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor,[a]
but evil comes to him who searches for it.

Work hard and don't look for trouble because you will find it.

I love that the Bible is a living book. Lessons and advice is just as relevant then as it is now.

Friday, June 21st: 2 Kings 1:1-2:25, Acts 13:42-14:7, Psalm 139:1-24, Proverbs 17:19-21 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is  2 Kings 1:1-2:25, Acts 13:42-14:7, Psalm 139:1-24, Proverbs 17:19-21

But Elijah replied to the captain, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and destroy you and your fifty men!” Then fire fell from heaven and killed them all.
2 Kings 1:10

As I was reading this verse, I was reminded that God never changes, and this same God who let the fire fall is the same God who is with us today. I was also reminded that God answers prayers, and I should have much more faith when it comes to that.

Then he went out to the spring that supplied the town with water and threw the salt into it. And he said, “This is what the Lord says: I have purified this water. It will no longer cause death or infertility.”
2 Kings 2:21

This verse reminded me of the water pollution problems we have in Canada, and it made me question how often I pray for situations like that. Again, this shows me how I should pray more faithfully.

Psalm 138:7-8 NLT
(7) Though I am surrounded by troubles,
you will protect me from the anger of my enemies.
You reach out your hand,
and the power of your right hand saves me.
(8) The Lord will work out his plans for my life - for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever.
Don't abandon me, for you made me.

I felt this was an encouraging piece of scripture, and valuable. We all go through hard times, and it's extremely welcoming to hear again that God is with us. In the end we will have victory if we trust in and live for God.

Wednesday, June 19th: 1 Kings 20:1-21:29, Acts 12:24-13:15, Psalm 137:1-9, Proverbs 17:16 ~ Tammy

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 1 Kings 20:1-21:29, Acts 12:24-13:15, Psalm 137:1-9, Proverbs 17:16

It is senseless to pay to educate a fool,
since he has no heart for learning.

My devotional book had an interesting take on this verse.....

At first blush this proverb could appear to be about the senselessness of investing good money in educating a foolish child. But that's only because we bring our modern ideas of school tuition costs to the ancient text. the practice of paying a teacher was unknown until the Middle Ages.

What Proverbs 17:16 presents is the pictures of a person who has no inclination to engage in a patient process of becoming wise and assumes instead that wisdom can be bought with money.  This fool has heard the proverb writer's instruction to "get wisdom," which si "better than gold," bu rather than submitting to God in holy fear, rather than experiencing slow growth through patient study o God's Word, and rather than being willing to be transformed from teh inside, he digs in his pockets to pay for the quick fix.

Let's be willing to do the work and attain true wisdom!

Tuesday, June 18th:

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 1 Kings 19:1-21Acts 12:1-23Psalm 136:1-26Proverbs 17:14-15

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake; And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.         1 Kings 19:11-13 (KJV)

In the movie "The Nativity", near the beginning, is a scene of a lady telling this story of Elijah to a group of children. She says the parts I have highlighted in blue and the children answer with the parts in red. I love how these verses just came alive in that scene.

Elijah knew that the gentle whisper was God's voice. He understood that God doesn't only reveal himself in powerful and miraculous ways. And sometimes we miss Him because he is often whispering in the quietness of our hearts. With all the activity and noise in our lives today we have to make a special effort to listen quietly for His voice.

Saturday, June 15th: 1 Kings 14:1-15:24, Acts 10:1-23, Psalm 133:1-3, Proverbs 17:7-8 ~ Tammy

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 1 Kings 14:1-15:24, Acts 10:1-23, Psalm 133:1-3, Proverbs 17:7-8

1 Kings 15: 11 Asa did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight, as his ancestor David had done. 12 He banished the male and female shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols[g] his ancestors had made. 13 He even deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother because she had made an obscene Asherah pole. He cut down her obscene pole and burned it in the Kidron Valley. 14 Although the pagan shrines were not removed, Asa’s heart remained completely faithful to the Lord throughout his life.

A couple of things stood out to me in this short passage.

First, Asa did what was pleasing in the Lord's sight.  We, too, need to be concerned with how our actions look to God, not what they look like to those around us.

Second, he didn't just do the right thing when it was easy, he also did the right thing when it was hard, when it cost him something.  It could not have been easy to depose his own grandmother, but he knew that his relationship with God and doing what was right was more important than pleasing his grandmother.

Third, his heart remained completely faithful to the Lord throughout his life.  Would that was said of all of us!

Proverbs 17:6
Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged;
parents[a] are the pride of their children.

The second half of this proverb is an excellent reminder that we shouldn't be so concerned with how the choices our children make reflect on us that we forget to consider how our lives and our choices reflect on our children.

Thursday, June 13: 1 Kings 11 - 12:19, Acts 9:1-25, Psalms 131:1-3, Proverbs 17:4-5 ~ Nathan

1 Kings 11:6, 9-11
(6)So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not follow the LORD completely, as David his father had done.
(9)The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
(10) Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord's command.
(11) So the LORD said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.

We may not have as much as Solomon had, but we have a lot more then most. We have also been given a great opportunity to give our lives to Jesus and live for Him, are we distracted by all our own worldly gains?

Do we focus less on what truly matters - God, and rather focus more on how to succeed in the world's eyes?

A good reminder to keep our priorities right, and spend more time focusing on God.

Psalm 130:3-4
Lord, if you kept a record of our sins,
who, O Lord, could ever survive?
But you offer forgiveness,
that we might learn to fear you.

From my devotional book:
From his vantage point, the psalmist couldn't see what would make this overflowing forgiveness possible, since he knew God is perfectly just. But he put his hope in God's unfailing love anyway. What he didn't know at the time was that God would deal with our sin, not by pretending it didn't exist, but by pouring out the punishment for it on his own Son.

So thankful for His forgiveness!

Tuesday, June 11th: 1 Kings 8:1-66, Acts 7:51-8:13, Psalm 129:1-8, Proverbs 17:1

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 1 Kings 8:1-66, Acts 7:51-8:13, Psalm 129:1-8, Proverbs 17:1

We hear lots about Paul (Saul) in the bible and most of it is in light of all the good things he was teaching and preaching, all the people he brought to Christ and the persecution he faced. But there are a few excerpts of how evil he was prior to becoming a Christian. He stood by while Stephen was stoned here in Acts and it says "Saul was there, giving approval to his (Stephen's) death."

Acts 9: 1 says "Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord’s followers." He really was not a nice person.

And yet look at all the great things he did in Christ's name throughout the rest of his life.

We need to try to remember that although people may have done very bad things in their lives there is always hope for redemption and God can use a "bad" person in mighty, mighty ways.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 1 Kings 5:1-6:38, Acts 7:1-29, Psalm 127:1-5, Proverbs 16:28-30

"Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted." Psalm 127:1

From my devotional book regarding building our family......
But trusting God to build the house doesn't come naturally for most of us. In our desire and determination to be good parents, we slip into thinking that if our children are going to become lovers of God, it will be due to our diligence. We must keep them involved in church, teach them the right values, instill in them good habits, surround them with godly people, and live before them as good examples.

Of course, all of these are worthwhile endeavors. But Psalm 127 calls us away from our I've got to do it right; it's all up to me approach to parenting and into an I can trust God; he's got to do it reliance in parenting.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 1 Kings 3:3-4:34; Acts 6:1-15; Psalm 126:1-6; Proverbs 16:26-27

1 Kings 3:10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. 11 So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies— 12 I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! 13 And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! 14 And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.”

God will always acknowledge and bless a heart that seeks after Him.  I love that Solomon was wise enough to know he wasn't wise enough, and to ask for wisdom.  And I love that God blessed him with not only wisdom, but more than he could ask or imagine.

There is a path before each person that seems right,

  • Proverbs 16:25

This verse made me think of our society today. We see a lot of views in the media that people have convinced themselves are the “right paths” (abortion, homosexuality, etc.), but we need to remember that these paths do end in death; they are not the paths the Lord has made for us to follow. We need to stay focused on God and His Word in order to stay away from taking these viewpoints on as our own.

(29) Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. [30] Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” [31] After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly

I found it amazing what faith Peter and John and the rest of the early believers had. They weren't intimidated by the world around them, and were focused on what Jesus had done and taught.

Does my focus on Jesus come close to what Peter and John showed? Not even close. They were so focused on Jesus they almost ignored what was going on around them.

A reminder to focus on Jesus more throughout the day, and make decisions the way he would want.

A sacrifice isn't a sacrifice if it doesn't cost anything.  Love requires sacrifice - sacrifice of time, sacrifice of self, sacrifice of money, and on and on.

We show love to God and to others when we sacrifice something for their good instead of our own.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Samuel 22:1-23:23, Acts 2:1-47, Psalm 122:1-9, Proverbs 16:19-20

The path to salvation is really so simple...

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 2:37-39

I think too often this message has been complicated by human measurements because we want to know that the person was sincere. I can't think of any conversion story in the bible where they waited around to find out if the convert was sincere or whether he/she would just keep living the same way. It was simple...repent and be baptized. Period. It's not up to us to determine the sincerity or to judge the converted life.

And then maybe we just question our own salvation. Are we doing it right? Are we doing enough? Are we reading our bible enough? Praying enough? And yet, none of those are ever listed as a condition of our salvation.

I've always loved Psalm 121.   This is what my Life Application Bible says....
This song expresses assurance and hope in God's protection day and night. He not only made the hills but heaven and earth as well. We should never trust a lesser power than God himself. But not only is he all-powerful, he also watches over us. Nothing diverts or deters him. We are safe. We never outgrow our need for God's untiring watch over our lives.

Saturday, June 1st: 2 Samuel 18:1-19:10; John 20:1-31; Psalm 119:153-176; Proverbs 16:14-15 ~ Tammy

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Samuel 18:1-19:10; John 20:1-31; Psalm 119:153-176; Proverbs 16:14-15

31 Then the man from Ethiopia arrived and said, “I have good news for my lord the king. Today the Lord has rescued you from all those who rebelled against you.”
32 “What about young Absalom?” the king demanded. “Is he all right?”
And the Ethiopian replied, “May all of your enemies, my lord the king, both now and in the future, share the fate of that young man!”
33 [g]The king was overcome with emotion. He went up to the room over the gateway and burst into tears. And as he went, he cried, “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son.”
As my devotional bible points out, it is absolutely heartrending for a parent to watch helplessly as their child destroys their life by sin.  But different commentaries have different thoughts regarding David's response to Absalom's death.

Matthew Henry's concise commentary: Some think David's wish arose from concern about Absalom's everlasting state; but he rather seems to have spoken without due thought. He is to be blamed for showing so great fondness for a graceless son. Also for quarrelling with Divine justice. And for opposing the justice of the nation, which, as king, he had to administer, and which ought to be preferred before natural affection. The best men are not always in a good frame; we are apt to over-grieve for what we over-loved. But while we learn from this example to watch and pray against sinful indulgence, or neglect of our children, may we not, in David, perceive a shadow of the Saviour's love, who wept over, prayed for, and even suffered death for mankind, though vile rebels and enemies.

My Life Application Bible: Why was David so upset over the death of his rebel son? (1) David realized that he, in part, was responsible for Absalom's death. Nathan, the prophet, had said that because David had killed Uriah, his own sons would rebel against him. (2) David was angry at Joab and his officers for killing Absalom against his wishes. (3) David truly loved his son, even though Absalom did nothing to deserve his love. It would have been kinder and more loving to deal with Absalom and his runaway ego when he was younger.

MacArthur Study Bible: In spite of all the harm that Absalom had caused, David was preoccupied with his personal loss in a melancholy way that seems to be consistent with his weakness as a father. It was an unwarranted zeal for such a worthless son, and a warning about the pitiful results of sin.

From enduringword.com:  We can understand David’s strong reaction by understanding that in part, David was so deeply moved because he knew that he supplied the soil this tragedy grew from.
– The soil came from David’s indulgent parenting. He found it difficult to say “No” to Absalom, so the son grew up thinking he was entitled to everything he wanted. In part, David’s grief came from knowing that if he had done a better job of bringing up this privileged son, he might be alive today.
– The soil came from David’s sin with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah, after which God promised David: The sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife . . . I will raise up adversity against you from your own house (2 Samuel 12:10-11). The tragic and violent death of Absalom was a partial fulfillment of this promise.
– The soil came from David’s own sinful indulgence of his passions and smaller rebellions against God, which sins and weaknesses were magnified in his sons. Like any parent, David wished his sons and daughters would turn out better than he did. Yet often, the small sins in the parent are magnified in the children. Quite to his own horror, David found this to be true regarding Absalom.
There is a subtle revelation of this in David’s anguished cry: “O my son Absalom; my son, my son Absalom.” David mourned so much for Absalom because he really was his son. David saw his sins, his weaknesses, and his rebellion exaggerated in Absalom. Morgan explains this idea: “This surely had a deeper note in it than that of the merely half-conscious repetition of words occasioned by personal grief. The father recognized how much he was responsible for the son. It is as though he had said: He is indeed my son, his weaknesses are my weaknesses, his passions are my passions, his sins are my sins.” (Morgan)
David carried this sense of identification with Absalom to the point where he said, “If only I had died in your place.” David wanted to die in the place of his rebellious son. What David could not do, Jesus did by dying in the place of rebellious sinners. This is the cry of God’s heart – to restore rebels by dying in their place. Thank God that He did for His rebellious children what David only wished he could do.
