Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 60:1-62:5, Philippians 1:27-2:18, Psalm 72:1-20, Proverbs 24:11-1

Scripture:
Though he was God,[a]
    he did not think of equality with God
    as something to cling to.
7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges[b];
    he took the humble position of a slave[c]
    and was born as a human being.
When he appeared in human form,[d]
8     he humbled himself in obedience to God
    and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Observation: If we are to become like Jesus, it means choosing the hard way.

Application: No one likes to do things the hard way. We look for the fast easy solution. This isn't always the best one and often it doesn't last. Think about a home renovation like painting: the quick and easy way means that it might look good for awhile but it won't last and will often look worse in time then when it started if you don't take the time to patch the holes, tape off the baseboards, or prime the surface properly. It's much harder to look at the root cause than to just fix the exterior. Jesus did things the hard way. He came to earth to endure life in an imperfect world and then suffered and died to pay the price of our sin. He looked at the root cause. We sinned. We wrecked our relationship with God. We needed a Saviour. God could have just wiped out humanity as a just punishment. He could have also created us without free will. We were bought with a price and have the chance to choose it or deny it.

Prayer: Creator God, You have always done things the hard way, the right way. We fail You often as we search for quick fixes and easy solutions. It was no easy solution when You sent Your son in our place to die and accept the punishment we deserved. Thank you for Your divine plan of redemption. Amen.

Isaiah 50:7

Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame.

An example of how to think and live, trusting in the Lord alone. This will be more then enough.

Often we can feel overwhelmed by life, here is a reminder to shut the outside noise off and look to God. "Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced..."

I like the image of the verses in Isaiah 44. How often do we make an idol out of something or someone only to realize that it didn't bring us the joy we longed for. There is only One who can bring us joy and completeness in life. We are very foolish when we look to others or objects to bring us fulfillment.

9 How foolish are those who manufacture idols.
    These prized objects are really worthless.
The people who worship idols don’t know this,
    so they are all put to shame.
10 Who but a fool would make his own god—
    an idol that cannot help him one bit?
11 All who worship idols will be disgraced
    along with all these craftsmen—mere humans—
    who claim they can make a god.
They may all stand together,
    but they will stand in terror and shame.

12 The blacksmith stands at his forge to make a sharp tool,
    pounding and shaping it with all his might.
His work makes him hungry and weak.
    It makes him thirsty and faint.
13 Then the wood-carver measures a block of wood
    and draws a pattern on it.
He works with chisel and plane
    and carves it into a human figure.
He gives it human beauty
    and puts it in a little shrine.
14 He cuts down cedars;
    he selects the cypress and the oak;
he plants the pine in the forest
    to be nourished by the rain.
15 Then he uses part of the wood to make a fire.
    With it he warms himself and bakes his bread.
Then—yes, it’s true—he takes the rest of it
    and makes himself a god to worship!
He makes an idol
    and bows down in front of it!
16 He burns part of the tree to roast his meat
    and to keep himself warm.
    He says, “Ah, that fire feels good.”
17 Then he takes what’s left
    and makes his god: a carved idol!
He falls down in front of it,
    worshiping and praying to it.
“Rescue me!” he says.
    “You are my god!”

18 Such stupidity and ignorance!
    Their eyes are closed, and they cannot see.
    Their minds are shut, and they cannot think.
19 The person who made the idol never stops to reflect,
    “Why, it’s just a block of wood!
I burned half of it for heat
    and used it to bake my bread and roast my meat.
How can the rest of it be a god?
    Should I bow down to worship a piece of wood?”
20 The poor, deluded fool feeds on ashes.
    He trusts something that can’t help him at all.
Yet he cannot bring himself to ask,
    “Is this idol that I’m holding in my hand a lie?”

Isaiah 10:3 NLT
What will you do when I punish you, when I send disaster upon you from a distant land? To whom will you turn for help? Where will your treasures be safe?

There is no other place to turn to for help, there is only God. The Israelites would learn this, do we know this?

When we are looking for something solid to lean on and trust in, there is only one true and reliable option - God. Do we go to Him first, or only after trying other options that fail?

Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.”
Isaiah 6:5-7

Isaiah felt his weakness at this moment and recognized that it was not his ability to speak but God's grace that he should have been placing his self worth in. How often we put our faith in our own abilities rather than recognizing that all that we need is God. He is where our identity lies.

I was reading something similar earlier today in regards to our self-worth.

You are not your past mistakes, you are not your past sins. You have been redeemed by the blood. Keep on pressing on. God is working through your struggles. He knows! God knew you and I were going to be messy. God isn’t frustrated with you so take that out of your head. God hasn’t abandoned you. God’s love is not based on your performance. God’s mercy is not dependent on you. Christ has become our righteousness. He did what you and I could never do.

You were bought with the precious blood of Christ. Not only has God chosen you, not only has God saved you, but God is working in your struggles to make you more like Christ. Don’t let things like sin discourage you. You were bought with the blood of Christ. Now press on. Keep on fighting! Don’t give up. Go to the Lord, confess your sins, and press on! God is not done working yet! If you could have saved yourself by your performance, then you would have never needed a Savior! Jesus is our only claim.

Monday, Octoeber 8: Isaiah 64-66, 1 Peter 4~by Pamela

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 64-66, 1 Peter 4

Yesterday in Sunday School we talked about sin and the guilt we often feel as Christians when our sins separate us from God. This stood out for me:

We are all infected and impure with sin.
    When we display our righteous deeds,
    they are nothing but filthy rags.
Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall,
    and our sins sweep us away like the wind.

We are born sinful and we spend so much time trying to justify our sin or cover it up. Like David, trying to cover up his indiscretion with Bathsheba, covers up his sin by killing Uriah. With all of David's "righteous deeds" the sin of lust makes them just "filthy rags". The teacher today compared it to seeing a bride walk down the aisle with a big dirty stain on her dress. This would be what everyone would focus on. When we have sin, we have our own stain on display.

There will be punishment for sin:

15 See, the Lord is coming with fire,
    and his swift chariots roar like a whirlwind.
He will bring punishment with the fury of his anger
    and the flaming fire of his hot rebuke.
16 The Lord will punish the world by fire
    and by his sword.
He will judge the earth,
    and many will be killed by him.

One day all our stains will be revealed and will need to be accounted for. Only when Jesus covers the stain and it is seen no more will be escape the wrath of God.

This repeated in the NT passage:

4 Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. 5 But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead. 6 That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead[b]—so although they were destined to die like all people,[c] they now live forever with God in the Spirit.[d]

Our society prefers to gloss over sin. Everything is grey instead of black and white. Truth has become relative. However, there will come a time when we need to account for our words and our actions. We will be judged. It is not easy to live for Christ. But scripture promises that we don't journey this path alone and that it will worth it:

So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.

“Listen! The Lord’s arm is not too weak to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear you call.”

When we don’t get an answer we want from God, or we don’t feel like we’re getting an answer, it doesn’t mean He is too weak or can’t hear us. Sometimes the answer is “wait” and sometimes the answer is “no”. And sometimes, as the next verse points out, our sin is getting in the way of hearing the answer.

It’s like when a kid has a temper tantrum at the grocery store and then asks you to buy them a treat. There’s no way they’re getting a treat after behaving like that. 

It’s a similar situation with God. When we keep sinning (and not seeking Him for forgiveness or guidance in how to do the right thing), why would He reward us with a “treat”? We need to ask for forgiveness, and work hard to get rid of our sin through Him.  And then maybe the next time we’re “at the store”, if we listen well, we might get a treat.

A few verses that stood out to me

Isaiah 55:1
“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

A reminder that we are invited to come to Jesus. This won't cost us money, like everything else in our world does, it's free and worth it.

1 Peter 1:8-9
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, [9] for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

This sums up what I know is true and right. We can't see Him but believe. A good reminder and encouragement to keep up our faith and work towards the end when we can live with Him in glory.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 43-45, Matthew 13:1-23

Matthew 13:12-14 says, "For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: 'You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive."


Jesus is explaining why he is teaching in parables, and explaining how the large crowds do not undersatnd the Kingdom of God as well as the disciples do, and it really made me think that we are all the crowd, needing to be taught in parables, for example he says, "seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand." and many times we can hear something but not hear it in the way it us supposed to be said, but in the case of a parable, it is usually heard the way it is meant to be heard.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 34-36, Matthew 6:19-34

Isaiah 36:14-15
This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you! [15] Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, 'The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.'

We hear these words from people today too, urging us not to trust in the Lord, or urging us to place our trust in something other then God. Is their something out there that's greater then God?

Let's not be fooled, trusting in the Lord is the only sure thing we can do in life. The odds were fiercely against the people of Judea, but God helped them succeed. How dangerous is it to ignore God and place our trust in human strength?

Do we place our whole trust in the Lord?

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 19-21; Matthew 3

“After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”” - ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭3:16-17‬

I read these verses and then moved on, thinking “what am I going to write about for this week’s blog?” And then, rereading the passage, realized what I had missed. 

Imagine being one of the many people gathered around watching Jesus get baptized. Those people probably woke up that morning and did their usual chores and jobs. Or maybe they woke up excited for the journey ahead to the Jordan River to watch, or even to be baptized. Imagine being there to see the Son of God be baptized! Imagine seeing the heavens open and watching the Spirit of God come down like a dove and sit on Jesus’ shoulder. Imagine hearing a voice from the sky proclaiming who Jesus was!

We often read verses like this and don’t even think about what they mean. There was so much of God’s amazing glory in these two verses, and I just skimmed through them!

Let’s take the time to not only read our bibles, but to try to understand the context and stories being told of God’s glory.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is  Isaiah 4-6, Titus 2

Isaiah 5:12
They furnish wine and lovely music at their grand parties - lyre and harp, tambourine and flute - but they never think about the Lord or notice what He is doing.

This verse made me think about my own life and how much I think about the Lord Jesus. I think about Him during my devotions each day, and I pray at meal times and at other times throughout the day, but do I truly put Him first?

Do I make my plans throughout the work day and evening, with God in mind, or would I say I'm so busy - but I'll try to do what He wants? Sometimes things come up and I feel bad for not praying about this sooner.

This is a reminder for me to focus on God more throughout the day and evening, and truly make Him a priority!

“The Lord says, “I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help. I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me. I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’ to a nation that did not call on my name.”‭‭ - Isaiah‬ ‭65:1

God is always there. When we choose to go our own path, He waits for us, ready to take us back at any time. He calls our names and waits for us to return to Him. And every time He welcomes us back with open arms. He is always there, always welcoming, always loving, and always waiting for our return. What a loving, patient God we serve.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 62-64; 1 Timothy 1

1 Timothy 1:15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.

It can be easy for those of us who have been believers as long as we can remember to become proud of faith to the point that we forget that our sin nailed Jesus to the cross just as assuredly as any one else's!  Christ came to die to save sinners - to save me.  I am a sinner, and it would do me well not to forget that.

The danger of forgetting the grace God has shown us is that it can cause us to be less than gracious to those around us.  We can easily shift into an attitude of superiority and forget that "there but for the grace of God go we".  Just because I was blessed with Christian parents doesn't mean that I am better than someone who was not so fortunate.  Just because I didn't live a lifetime of rebellion before surrendering to Christ does not make me better than someone born into a non-believing family who never had the opportunity to hear about Christ as a child. 

I am a sinner.  We all are.  And thanks be to God, He has provided salvation for all who call on His name.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is: Isaiah 59-61; 2 Thessalonians 3

"Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear.  But your
iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.  For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt.  Your lips have spoken falsely, and your tongue mutters wicked things."  Isaiah 59:1-3

As I was reading this passage, it was comforting in being reminded that our God never leaves us.  He hears all our requests, and He will always keep us in His grasp.  

It's our iniquities that drift us away from God, and it's God's gift of forgiveness that bridges us back.  It's our hands that are stained with blood, and it's Jesus who washes us white as snow.  It's our sinful actions and words that make us guilty, and it's Jesus who redeems us. It's not in our power or what we can do, it's what HE can do!

2 Thessalonians 2:15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by what we said or what we wrote.
There is no such thing as absolute truth in our culture anymore.  Your truth is whatever you want it to be, whatever you want to believe, as long as it doesn't interfere with my beliefs.

Not so for the Christian.  We must stake our doctrine on the Bible.  God's Word must be our foundation or we too will find ourselves shifting on the instability and corruptness around us. God's opinion is the only one that matters!

Wednesday, October 18th: Isaiah 53 - 55, 2 Thessalonians 1 ~ Nathan

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 53 - 55, 2 Thessalonians 1

Isaiah 55: 6-7
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon

Verse 6 caught my attention, we are to seek the Lord while he may be found and call on him while he is near. We don't have forever to get our lives in order and then follow God, we need to make that decision now and stick with it.

2 Thessalonians 1: 6
God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you

We don't need to worry about giving pay back to anyone, God will take care of that. But we should also remember that we need to seek forgiveness and make things right with those we've troubled. Often it's more fun to look at ourselves as victims, but we also are offenders at times and therefore need to make things right.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is: Isaiah 50-52-1 Thessalonians 5

Isaiah 51:1-3 stood out for me today as a reminder that God is faithful!! I found this Bible study on the passage here. A great reminder to listen, remember God's past faithfulness and trust that God can use one person (who loves HIM) to accomplish His plans.

(Isa 51:1-3) Listen: the LORD's past faithfulness is a promise of future blessing.

Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him. For the LORD will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness will be found in it, thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

a. Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness: The LORD here speaks to His people; but His people have had trouble listening to Him. So three times in this chapter, the exhortation is given: Listen to Me.

b. Look to the rock from which you were hewn … Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you: God counsels His people to look at His work in His people in days past. This is one of the great glories of God's Word to us; it tells us how God has dealt with His people, and gives us faith and guidance for His work in our lives - if we will listen to Him.

i. As Isaiah speaks to them here, God's people were in a discouraged place. They felt defeated, and the prophet tells them to look to God's work in and through His people in days past.

ii. "Once a Christian gets eaten up with discouragement and unbelief it takes a great deal to shake him out of it. Those two emotions are the masterstrokes of Satan. So long as the child of God maintains an attitude of praise and trust in the Lord, then he is invincible. Once the devil gets him discouraged, that poor man in really going to take a knocking!" (Redpath)

c. For I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him: Abraham was one man, from one simple family. Yet God called him alone, and increased him. This should remind His people today that God does not need many people to do a great work. He can bless and increase one man alone. Isaiah wanted God's people - in view here are the returning exiles from Babylon, and those of Israel's ultimate regathering - to not be discouraged of their small numbers, but realize that just as He did great things with Abraham and Sarah, He can do great things through them.

d. Remembering Abraham and Sarah should give them hope for this promise: For the LORD will comfort Zion … He will make her wilderness like Eden … Joy and gladness will be found in it. The promise seems too good to be true, but by faithfully remembering God's work in people like Abraham and Sarah, they would have the faith to believe God's promise to them today.

i. This shows how we can benefit through God's work in the lives of others. When we hear of what God has done and is doing in the lives of others, it can build our faith for God's work in our own lives.

ii. He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD reminds us that though these promises had a near fulfillment in the return from Babylon's captivity, their ultimate fulfillment is in a regathered, blessed, and saved Israel in the millennium.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 47-49; 1 Thessalonians 4

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
Though in the intensity of grief these words could seem trite, in truth they are a lifeline to grasp onto. I do not know how people can face death without the hope that we have.  That is a grief too large to comprehend.  I am so very thankful that we have this hope, this assurance.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Isaiah 45-46; 1 Thessalonians 3

“I create the light and make the darkness. I send good times and bad times. I, the Lord, am the one who does these things.” - ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭45:7‬

God creates our paths, He plans our lives. He blesses us with good times and bad times. He knows what He is doing and He is in ultimate control over our lives. How comforting is that, knowing that our Creator, who cares and loves for us so much, is the One who plans our paths and is in control of our lives. Yet, for some reason, our small, foolish selves, want to go our own way and make our own paths. Really? Do we really think our sinful, small, human selves can create a better plan that the all-knowing, all-powerful, Creator of the universe? It sounds pretty silly when you think about it.

Let’s make a point to follow what the Lord has planned for us today, and stop questioning the things that God has for us.
