Friday, June 21st: 2 Kings 1:1-2:25, Acts 13:42-14:7, Psalm 139:1-24, Proverbs 17:19-21 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is  2 Kings 1:1-2:25, Acts 13:42-14:7, Psalm 139:1-24, Proverbs 17:19-21

But Elijah replied to the captain, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and destroy you and your fifty men!” Then fire fell from heaven and killed them all.
2 Kings 1:10

As I was reading this verse, I was reminded that God never changes, and this same God who let the fire fall is the same God who is with us today. I was also reminded that God answers prayers, and I should have much more faith when it comes to that.

Then he went out to the spring that supplied the town with water and threw the salt into it. And he said, “This is what the Lord says: I have purified this water. It will no longer cause death or infertility.”
2 Kings 2:21

This verse reminded me of the water pollution problems we have in Canada, and it made me question how often I pray for situations like that. Again, this shows me how I should pray more faithfully.

Friday, June 7th: 1 Kings 2:1-3:2, Acts 5:1-42, Psalm 125:1-5, Proverbs 16:25 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is  1 Kings 2:1-3:2, Acts 5:1-42, Psalm 125:1-5, Proverbs 16:25

There is a path before each person that seems right,
    but it ends in death.
  • Proverbs 16:25

This verse made me think of our society today. We see a lot of views in the media that people have convinced themselves are the “right paths” (abortion, homosexuality, etc.), but we need to remember that these paths do end in death; they are not the paths the Lord has made for us to follow. We need to stay focused on God and His Word in order to stay away from taking these viewpoints on as our own.

Friday, May 31st: 2 Samuel 17:1-29, John 19:23-42, Psalm 119:129-152, Proverbs 16:12-13 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Samuel 17:1-29, John 19:23-42, Psalm 119:129-152, Proverbs 16:12-13

Rivers of tears gush from my eyes
    because people disobey your instructions.
- Psalm 119:136

This verse reminds me of the saying, “break my heart for what breaks yours.” I think this is a prayer we should pray more often. As followers of Christ, we want as many people to follow Him as possible, and it should break our hearts that not nearly everyone does. We should want to be moved by the same things God is moved by, and we should work even harder to get others to believe and be passionate about the same things.

Friday, May 24th: 2 Samuel 4:1-6:23, John 13:31-14:14, Psalm 119:17-32, Proverbs 15:31-32 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 2 Samuel 4:1-6:23, John 13:31-14:14, Psalm 119:17-32, Proverbs 15:31-32

If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself;
but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.
- Proverbs 15:32

This is a good reminder for us all to not let our pride get in the way when people give us instructions on how to get better. For myself, this means when it comes to my music studies. Even though I like to think I know everything, I know I don’t, and I need to be open to criticism from those who do know better than me.

Friday, May 17th: 1 Samuel 20:1-21:15, John 9:1-41, Psalm 113:1-114:8, Proverbs 15:15-17 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 1 Samuel 20:1-21:15, John 9:1-41, Psalm 113:1-114:8, Proverbs 15:15-17

Proverbs 15:16
Better to have little, with fear for the Lord, than to have great treasure and inner turmoil.

This is a great reminder for us all. In this world we are often working to achieve a higher status in everything we do, but we need to remember that we should be working for the Lord, not for ourselves.

Friday, May 3rd: Judges 17:1-18:31, John 3:1-21, Psalm 104:1-24, Proverbs 14:20-21 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Judges 17:1-18:31, John 3:1-21, Psalm 104:1-24, Proverbs 14:20-21

O Lord, what a variety of things you have made!
In wisdom you have made them all.
The earth is full of your creatures.

  • Psalm 104:24

It’s good to take a moment every once in a while to stop and appreciate all that God has created. The earth really is full of the magnificent works of His hand, let’s make sure we praise Him for it.

Friday, April 26th: Judges 6:1-40, Luke 22:54-23:12, Psalm 95:1-96:13, Proverbs 14:5-6 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Judges 6:1-40, Luke 22:54-23:12, Psalm 95:1-96:13, Proverbs 14:5-6

The sea belongs to him, for he made it.
His hands formed the dry land, too.
  • Psalm 95:5

This verse made me think of the one time I heard someone say that if they could travel back in time to any point they would choose creation. I had never thought about that before but that would be exactly where I would choose to go too. Imagine watching the planets being moulded together, the stars be put into place, the land and the water being separated. That would be so cool to see!

Friday, April 12th: Joshua 5:1-7:15, Luke 15:1-32, Psalm 81:1-16, Proverbs 13:1 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Joshua 5:1-7:15, Luke 15:1-32, Psalm 81:1-16, Proverbs 13:1

I find we often read stories of the Israelites and how they don’t have enough faith. But today we read a story of great faith; the story of the walls of Jericho crumbling down.

Imagine being told to march around a city seven times in order for the walls to fall down. That sounds completely irrational and out of the ordinary, and I’m sure the Israelites thought that too. But they showed great faith by listening to God rather than listening to their own thoughts.

We should show this kind of great faith in our lives as well.

Friday, April 5th: Deuteronomy 28:1-68, Luke 11:14-36, Psalm 77:1-20, Proverbs 12:18 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Deuteronomy 28:1-68, Luke 11:14-36, Psalm 77:1-20, Proverbs 12:18

“Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be blessed.” - Deuteronomy 28:6

In today’s reading, we are reminded that there will be a reward for those who choose to follow God. If we work hard for Him on this earth, we will be rewarded in Heaven.

We also see the other side, that if we disobey God and choose to stray from Him, we will regret it forever.

So let’s hold on to the hope that there is something better coming, and not stray from the path that God has put in front of us.

Friday, March 15th: Numbers 22:21-23:30, Luke 1:57-80, Psalm 58:1-11, Proverbs 11:12-13 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Numbers 22:21-23:30, Luke 1:57-80, Psalm 58:1-11, Proverbs 11:12-13

As I was reading the story of Balaam and his talking donkey, I was reminded of the times I heard this story in my younger years of Sunday School. At that point in my life, I still had the “childlike faith” where it made complete sense to me that the donkey could talk. Now reading this same story, I’m more in awe of it. Imagine if your pet would suddenly speak to you! That would be pretty amazing.

I also noticed the fact that Balaam did not give his donkey the benefit of the doubt, even after knowing him for many years. How often am I quick to overreact to a friend or family member’s comment or action? The answer is probably a lot more often than I should. We need to remember to trust our loved ones, and give everyone the benefit of the doubt, especially those we’ve known for years and years.

Friday, March 8th: Numbers 10:1-11:23, Mark 14:1-21, Psalm 51:1-19, Proverbs 10:31-32 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Numbers 10:1-11:23, Mark 14:1-21, Psalm 51:1-19, Proverbs 10:31-32

The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

  • Psalm 51:17

We believe that God has grace for everyone, that no matter what they’ve done they can find restoration from God. But even though we believe this for everyone else, sometimes we find it hard to believe in for ourselves. Sure, we know that God has grace for us, but it’s hard to believe it sometimes.

This scripture reminds us that God will not reject a broke and repentant heart. No matter what you’ve done, He still has grace for you, and He still loves you.

Friday, March 1st: Leviticus 24:1-25:46, Mark 10:13-31, Psalm 44:9-26, Proverbs 10:20-21 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Leviticus 24:1-25:46, Mark 10:13-31, Psalm 44:9-26, Proverbs 10:20-21

The words of the godly encourage many,
but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.

  • Proverbs 10:21

We need to use our words to lift others up, not tear them down. Non-christians especially look at us to see how we might be different from them because of our faith. If we put other people down, we are hurting their image of who Jesus is. We need to always make sure we are doing our best to properly portray the image of Jesus, and that comes from encouraging others with our words.

Friday, February 22nd: Leviticus 13:1-59; Mark 6:1-29; Psalm 39:1-13; Proverbs 10:10 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Leviticus 13:1-59; Mark 6:1-29; Psalm 39:1-13; Proverbs 10:10

And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?
My only hope is in you.

  • Psalm 39:7

This is a simple reminder but such an important one. I find this is something that I keep hearing over and over again, whether it’s in the verses I’m reading or song I’m listening to:

“In Christ alone...”, “My only hope is in you...”, “I lay down everything ‘cause you’re all that I want...”

This message that Jesus is all I need seems to be everywhere, which means it’s probably something I need to put more faith in.

It’s hard to believe that I would be okay if everything and everyone in my life was taken from me. But this message of “my only hope is in you” reminds me that it is a truth. Jesus is all that we need, and we need to put all of our hope in Him.

9 “You know what I long for, Lord;
    you hear my every sigh.“
- Psalm 38:9

God hears every cry, understands every frustrating moment, and sees every tear. He knows the desires of our hearts more than we know them. We should always trust in His knowledge, and His care for us.

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Exodus 39:1-40:38, Mark 1:1-28, Psalm 35:1-16, Proverbs 9:11-12

I’m a very visual person so it’s always been a bit of a struggle for me to read these Old Testament passages. I’ve always wished there were some pictures to show what everything looked like. So, I googled what the priests garments looked like, and this seemed to give me a better visual:

Now this might not be the most accurate drawing ever, but at least it gives us an idea.

If you feel you need a better visual to what everything looks like in these passages, I’d encourage you to google some pictures and see what comes up. Just like all the skilled people we read about today, God gave skills to others that they could draw these images for those of us who have a hard time picturing the text in our heads. If you have a skill or talent God has given you, always use it to glorify God and help others gain a better understanding of what He says.

14 But I am trusting you, O Lord,
saying, “You are my God!”
Psalms 31:14

We read how distressed the writer is in the first few verses, and then we come to this verse. Though he felt like everything in his world was crashing down, he was choosing to trust in God.

Lord, let us put our hope and our faith in You. Whether it’s a good day, a bad day, or an average day, help us always to trust in You.

Friday, February 1st: Exodus 13:17-15:18, Matthew 21:23-46, Psalm 26:1-12, Proverbs 6:16-19 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Exodus 13:17-15:18, Matthew 21:23-46, Psalm 26:1-12, Proverbs 6:16-19

17 When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, “If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea. Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle
 - Exodus 13:17-18

It often feels like we are in seasons of waiting. And a lot of times we question why God would make us wait, and even tell Him that we think we’re ready for what’s coming next.

But, we are not God, so we don’t know the big picture, and we don’t have everything figured out perfectly (although sometimes we think we do). Like the Israelites, sometimes God needs to take us in a roundabout way to get to the end goal to teach us something, or show His glory.

In times of waiting, let’s remember that God has a plan, and He will get us where we need to go. We just need to trust in Him.

Friday, January 25th: Genesis 50:1 - Exodus 2:10, Matthew 16:13-17:9, Psalm 21:1-13, Proverbs 5:1-6 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Genesis 50:1 - Exodus 2:10, Matthew 16:13-17:9, Psalm 21:1-13, Proverbs 5:1-6

19 But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. 21 No, don’t be afraid. I will continue to take care of you and your children.” So he reassured them by speaking kindly to them
- Genesis 50:19-21

Joseph was treated brutally by his brothers for most of his early life. And yet, this is the attitude he had. He knew that God had a plan for Him when he was sold into slavery, sent to jail, and sure he would never see his family again. He saw that all of this had to happen so he could save so many peoples lives. He spoke kindly to his brothers, and showed them mercy just like God showed him, and just like God shows us.

Next time someone upsets us or wrongs us, let’s remember the kind of faith Joseph had in God and the plan He had for him. Let’s remember that there is nothing others can do to us that is worse than what we did to Christ. And let’s remember that God forgave us, so we should also forgive others.

Friday, January 18th: Genesis 37:1-38:30, Matthew 12:22-45, Psalm 16:1-11, Proverbs 3:27-32 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is  Genesis 37:1-38:30, Matthew 12:22-45, Psalm 16:1-11, Proverbs 3:27-32

I noticed that Joseph was 17 years old during the events in today's reading, which is something I haven't noticed before. Since I'm currently still 17, I imagined myself as Joseph a little more this time as I read. I couldn't imagine being sold into slavery, being betrayed by my siblings, and thinking I would never see my family again.  What faith Joseph must have had in the Lord.

The other thing was, I notice that almost every time there is a sexual sin committed, the woman (in this case, Tamar) is almost always the one blamed, and it is usually by the man (in this case, Judah). I always find this very sad, and often get angry at the men like Judah who act like such hypocrites. But, this makes me think, how many times have I acted just like these men, where I sin the same sin as someone else but only call them out for it without taking any blame for myself? The answer is probably a lot. Thankfully, it looks like Judah realized he was also guilty of sin in this story, and so should we be willing to admit when we have done something wrong.

We should always remember that anything anyone does is no worse than what we have done to Jesus. And yet, He still chose to set us free from the hurt we caused Him.

Friday, January 11th: Genesis 24:52-26:16; Matthew 8:18-34; Psalm 10:1-15; Proverbs 3:7-8

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Genesis 24:52-26:16; Matthew 8:18-34; Psalm 10:1-15; Proverbs 3:7-8

“So they called Rebekah. “Are you willing to go with this man?” they asked her. And she replied, “Yes, I will go.”
Genesis 24:57-58

I can imagine all the things Rebekah must have been feeling, probably a lot of fear. She had no idea who this servant was, and no idea who this man was that she would marry. She was probably sad to leave her family, knowing she would likely never see them again. Yet, Rebekah listened to God, and even given an opportunity to back out, she said: “Yes, I will go.”

We need to try to be like Rebekah in this story. We need to put our fears, anger, and sadness away, and we need to put our trust in God. Instead of worrying about all the things that could go wrong, say: “Yes, God, I will go.” Trust that God will provide, and that no matter what is a part of His plan for you, He is with you every step of the way.
