Thursday, January 5th: Genesis 13-15; Matthew 5:1-26 ~ Deena

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Genesis 13-15; Matthew 5:1-26

I am new to blogging and to be honest a little intimidated by this. It's out of my comfort zone but I agreed to try it because I see the great benefits of it. My blogs will only be on the New Testament portion of the daily readings.

For those who don't know me I am married almost 20 years and have three boys. I work at a preschool. Like all parents we are busy running around with our kids!

Today's reading starts with the Beatitudes.

Verse 6 is one that stands out to me: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."

When we really search after God and seek to do His will we are more content in life, even if our situation may not be well.

Tomorrow's Bible In a Year Passage: Genesis 16-17; Matthew 5:27-48

Thanks for the intro Deena! The Beatitudes are such a calming and encouraging way to prepare the disciples and the crowd for the teaching that is to come in the next several chapters. Preparing and bolstering their hearts. I love that.

Genesis 13:8-11
Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen.[a] 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.” 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other

Abram shows a good example of putting other's needs before ours, letting Lot chose first. Things turned out well for Abram still, this shows to me that God is in charge and blesses those that put others needs ahead of their own.

Currently I am in Miami and today I enjoyed a day on the beach. Compared to the beaches where I live, I always find the ocean so salty. I found the verse in Mathew 5:13 so fitting when it talked about the salt of the earth. I could definitely taste the difference between the water I am used to in a lake and the water of the ocean. It made me think that I should aim to be like an ocean rather than like a lake, I need to be full of flavour because salt with no taste is good for nothing and needs to be thrown out.

I noticed the covenant that God made with Abram in particular today as I was reading. I was intrigued today by the fact that God made it clear that the covenant with Abram was made and would be kept by He Himself and not through human efforts. Not to get ahead of the story, but too bad Abram did not remember that when Sarai became impatient and gave Hagar to him to move things along!

Thanks for joining us Deena!

So important to remember that we will never be satisfied if we look for fulfillment in anything outside of God.

Great insights in the comments today too! Love the salt analogy - love how God works in our everyday lives to drive a point home! I also always love that point about the covenant as well.

This passage stood out to me.....
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[b] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

I don't want to be ashamed of my faith but rather shine for the world to see!
