Wednesday, May 4th: 1 Kings 1:1-2:12, 2 Samuel 23:1-7, 1 Chronicles 29:26-30, Psalm 4-6 ~ Emma

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is 1 Kings 1:1-2:12, 2 Samuel 23:1-7, 1 Chronicles 29:26-30, Psalm 4-6

Once again, I am taking over for my dad. And, once again, I will be doing a SOAP post:

S (Scripture) - In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe. ~ Psalm 4:8

O (Observation) - In my mom's Life Application Bible, the theme written for Psalm 4 says this: "Rejoicing in God's protection and peace. We can place our confidence in God because He will listen when we call on Him." One of the many many things that I am so glad to know about God is that He is always watching over me. He will never ever leave me. He is always by my side. If knowing the Almighty God of Heaven's armies is on your side and never leaves you doesn't reassure you in times of need, I don't know what does.

A (Application) - I used to have trouble falling asleep at night, and would often wake up my parents late at night in tears, or close to it, terrified. They would often pray with me, and then send me back to bed. I would often recite all the bible verses I had memorized, and prayed and prayed for peace, and sang the song with the line: "the God of Peace will soon crush Satan. Yes, God will crush him, where? Underneath your feet!" Eventually, I realized that God doesn't sleep. And He is constantly watching over me. Eventually, I laid down to sleep in peace, knowing God alone would keep me safe.

P (Prayer) - Father, thank you that you are always with us. Thank you that you never leave us or forsake us. Your love goes beyond anything we can ever imagine. I pray that we would all sense your presence with us today, and feel your peace. Keep us safe, Father. In your name we pray, amen.

1 Chronicles 29:28
He died at a ripe old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth, and honor. Then his son Solomon ruled in his place.

David was a lowly shepherd who became King, chosen by God. His journey took him through many highs (killing Goliath) and lows (being pursued by his son Absalem), even big mistakes (taking Bathsheba and killing Uriah). But through it all he remained devoted to God. We all go through highs and lows in life as well, will we remain devoted to God, trusting in Him the whole way?

"Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly." Psalm 5:3

This verse stood out to me today and ties in with what Emma was saying. We know we can bring our requests to God and that He will hear us. So reassuring! Because of this assurance, we can also wait expectantly, just as David did.

I remember when we found that verse for you and what a help it was. God's Word truly is the source we need to turn to during good times and bad.

Our Kings portion today is rather discouraging. The book of 1 Kings began with a unified kingdom committed to obeying God, and ends in a divided kingdom in a continual downward spiral. We must guard against pride and know that we, too, are vulnerable to the same temptations that were the downfall of Israel, and to arm ourselves for the spiritual battles we face every day.
