Thursday, July 2nd: Deuteronomy 16-18, Acts 4:23-37 ~ Tammy

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Deuteronomy 16-18; Acts 4:23-37

I appreciated this quote from Matthew Henry's commentary on Deuteronomy 16....
If those who were under the law must rejoice before God, much more we that are under the grace of the gospel; which makes it our duty to rejoice evermore, to rejoice in the Lord always. When we rejoice in God ourselves, we should do what we can to assist others also to rejoice in him, by comforting the mourners, and supplying those who are in want. All who make God their joy, may rejoice in hope, for He is faithful that has promised.

Acts 4: 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness
May we have boldness to speak the truth - especially because the Word of God is so counter cultural. But when we speak, we must take care to speak in love, our words seasoned with grace.  But we must speak!

34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need

When I think of this happening in present day church, I know for myself it would be difficult to sell all that I have and give it to the poor in the group. But maybe my attitude of entitlement needs to change and I need to remember that all I have is really God's anyway. This one is tough

This stood out for me:

17 “You shall not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep in which is a blemish, any defect whatever, for that is an abomination to the Lord your God.

It's not only the act of obedience (sacrificing) but how you obey (not giving your best) that matters.

and this:
34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.

I think this is important today because society teaches us to be greedy and self centred and not be concerned with others.
