Saturday, August 15th: Psalms 91-93, 1 Peter 5 ~ Tammy

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Psalms 91-93; 1 Peter 5

I love the use of metaphors in Psalm 91 to describe God.  He is our shelter, He is our refuge, He is our fortress.  Truly, He is sovereign and filters everything through His hands.  He alone is worthy of our trust.

v11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.Though scripture never indicates that one guardian angel is assigned to each believer, this verse makes it clear that one of the functions of angels is to watch over believers.

Psalm 92 reminds us to be thankful and faithful every day.

Psalm 93 describes God's unchanging and almighty nature, using creation to describe His great power - and what a great example that is!

In our 1 Peter passage we see the importance of having the right kind of leaders and a reminder that we need to follow those leaders.  We also need to practice humility and release anxiety, showing trust in God.  We always need to be alert for the enemy, and trust God for our stability.

Two verses that stood out for me:

Psalm 92:2
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night,

This verse reminds us that we need to be living for God all day, not just reading our devotions in the morning and then moving on to our daily tasks on our own.

1 Peter 5:5
Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

This verse shows me I need to humbly follow those that God sets aside as leaders. It's not about me and what I want, but about serving God and furthering His kingdom.

I also had a verse about being humble stand out for me in the NT passage:

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you". (vs 6)

A key principle in Christian living is to be holy, as God is holy. If we humble ourselves under God's hand, then we are setting aside our sinful wants and desires and excercising a life pleasing to God.

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Love this reminder. It doesn't say he will take away all your anxieties or that he will fix everything but he wants you to lean on Him, share with Him, trust Him. It's like when you are a parent and your child comes to you with a problem. They aren't necessarily asking you to fix everything but they want to be heard and now that you care about the things they are struggling with.

....declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. We need to stand firm that this is the true Grace of God.
